After breakfast at the hotel, we
depart to visit the Ashkenazi Synagogue, famous for its imposing facade with
three oriental arches and octagonal rose windows. Inside, the floors are
marble, the striking blue dome is painted with stars, and the elaborately
carved dark wood ark combines Eastern European and arabesque styles. The Ahrida
Synagogue, located in the Balat district, is Istanbul's oldest synagogue, built
in the 15th century. Its Noah's Ark-shaped pulpit is exceptional. The Komando
Staircase is an elegant double-curved staircase built in the 19th century by
order of the Kamondos, the wealthiest family in the Jewish community. The
Zulfaris Synagogue, dating from 1671, is currently being restored as a museum
of Turkish Jewish life. After lunch, we will visit the Neve Shalom Synagogue,
where Turkish Jews attend Shabbat prayers, weddings, and funerals. Our guide
explains some historical facts about the synagogue and Turkish Jewish history.
We admire the Galata Tower from the outside, which has dominated the Istanbul
skyline since 1348. We stroll through the picturesque Galata district,
observing the daily life of its inhabitants, including workshops, grocery
stores, housewives hanging laundry, and children playing in the narrow streets
or going to and from school. After the tour, we return to the hotel. Overnight
in Istanbul.
